be advised

The Exchange and Study Away (ESA) office is here to help guide you through the study away process. Schedule a meeting with a member of our team and we can help you identify goals for your study away experience and guide you through choosing a program. We can also help you navigate questions about the application process, identity away, credit transfer, and finances, as well as provide relevant pre-departure information. Our team is available to you before, during, and after your experience. It’s never too early to schedule a 1:1 advising meeting!

Departmental Advisors: In addition, it is important to meet with your departmental advisor to talk through program options, possible credit transfer, and which term is right for you to go abroad based on your current degree progress.

Students Requiring Accommodations: Please reach out to the Center for Student Experience (CSE), cse@artcenter.edu or 626.396.2323, if you need academic, housing, and/or other disability-related accommodations or services during your time away.

International Students: Check in with international@artcenter.edu or at 626.396.2370 for questions about your visa status in relation to study away.

Eligibility + the Application

Once you have chosen a program, it’s time to apply. First, confirm your eligibility. Most programs typically require you to have completed 4 terms (undergrad) or 2 terms (grad), be in both good academic and disciplinary standing, and have at least one term remaining at ArtCenter. Some programs will have additional criteria such as software knowledge or specific making skills.

The application process varies, so check out the specific details on each program page. However, note the following general differences:

Faculty-Led Programs typically require one competitive application through the Study Away Application Portal. Application deadlines vary, but they are usually one term before your program is set to begin.

Exchange Programs first require an application through the Study Away Application Portal by March 1 for fall and September 15 or October 1 for spring and summer programs. Once you are nominated by your department, a second application to your program must be submitted.

Individualized Programs have varying deadlines but are typically a term or two before you plan to depart. In addition to the third-party application, students must submit a second application through the Study Away Application Portal by Week 6 the term before you go.

After determining your application deadline, begin to gather your materials. Most programs require the following basic elements:

  • Current ArtCenter transcript

  • Statement of purpose

  • Portfolio

  • Faculty recommendation

  • Copy of passport (must be valid for at least 6 months after your program ends)

Some programs will require additional items such as a CV/Resume, Course Plan, Home School Nomination, or evidence of specific skills.

acceptance + next steps

After you have completed your application, check your Study Away Application Portal and ArtCenter email regularly for reminders of items that you have not yet submitted. After your status has been changed to “Accepted” for your faculty-led, exchange, or individualized program, you will have one week to Commit to the Program through the Study Away Portal, and in many cases pay your $200 deposit.

Once you have been accepted and committed to your program, your status will move into the post-decision phase and post-decision paperwork will populate in the portal that must be completed before you depart.  Log into the Study Away Portal to complete these tasks. If you are doing an exchange or individualized program, keep in mind you will have additional items due for your chosen school. For more details on pre-departure, check out Prepare + Go.

Note that for international travel, you must have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after your program ends. If you did not submit your passport information with your application, you must input this information in our system well in advance of your departure in order to enroll in study away. If you do not have a passport or need to renew, we strongly suggest you begin the process as soon as possible. Refer to the Passports + Visas section of the website for more information.
