EYE ON BERLIN

Berlin is a place that reverberates with the echoes of the past. The city has witnessed eras of incredible innovation and creativity. It has also been torn apart by war, and even divided in two. It’s buildings and neighborhoods bear the scars of these upheavals, yet new growth and prosperity have once again made the city a mecca for all of Europe and beyond.

Students will mine Berlin’s past through research, and create sight specific artistic interventions that seek to remind viewers of aspects Berlin’s concealed past.

Throughout the Summer term in Pasadena, the Illustration Department will partner with HMCT/Archetype Press to enable students to produce ephemera in multiples. These items will be brought with us to Berlin and presented in inventive contexts throughout the city during our 2.5-week visit.

In addition, during our stay in Berlin, the students will visit studios, institutions and museums dedicated to social engagement within Design Practice.

SUMMER 2024 THEME—SUMMER 2025 THEME COMING SOON!

Long known for it’s cultural landmarks and unique neighborhoods teaming with creativity and innovation, Berlin also hosts a surprising array of natural wonders. Berlin is nine-times bigger than Paris, and nearly a third of it is comprised of green space’s and forestland. Living within the 520 acres of Berlin’s famous Tiergarten Park are a surprising number of animal species; including deer, fox, red squirrel, and wild boar! Egrets, beaver, crayfish and eel inhabit the 100 miles of waterways traversing the city.

This year’s EYE ON BERLIN theme will celebrate the wondrous diversity of wildlife who are at home in Berlin’s urban landscape. In highlighting the eco-diversity of Berlin, students will consider it’s place in our world’s future.

Throughout the Summer 2024 term in Pasadena, the Illustration Department will host a 3-Unit Course that will guide students in producing a variety of multi-media artwork. Students will be encouraged to explore pictorial, sculptural and printmaking techniques in a variety of personal styles to create a bestiary of Berlin’s fauna. At the start of Summer Break, these artworks will be brought with us to Berlin and presented in an immersive, student-curated exhibition in the heart of the city’s most vibrant gallery distract. Students will host the show, which will also feature a retail shop selling related student-produced merchandise.

During the remaining weeks of our stay in Berlin, the students will visit the spectacular artist studios, institutions, museums and historical sights that reflect Berlin’s reputation as one of Europe’s most vibrant and diverse cities.

ABOUT THE ARTCENTER BERLIN STUDIO

Building on deep connections forged over several years with some of Europe’s leading creative agencies, educational institutions and civic leaders, ArtCenter established a year-round studio for students in 2013. The satellite studio hosts trans-disciplinary studio projects, giving ArtCenter students an immersive experience in a city known for reinvention.

More than a study abroad program, the studio environment is designed to deliberately remove students from a traditional setting and move them into the atmosphere of a pop-up design office, organized like a professional creative agency. A network of high-caliber members of the local creative industries—communication and design agencies, artists and architects—support studio projects as dedicated mentors.

The Berlin studio hosts programs for as short as 10 days and as long as 12 weeks. Nearly every major has an opportunity to study in Berlin and there are program types for every academic and budget need.

Additionally, the studio provides the college an opportunity to offer professional education workshops, networking receptions and program space for Europe-based alumni.

Learn more about the ArtCenter Berlin Studio. Other Berlin Program options include the Berlin Fine Art program hosted by Fine Art or one of the ArtCenter Berlin Term full term studios.
