There are many scholarship opportunities outside of ArtCenter that can be applied toward a study away program. When researching scholarships, check to confirm that you and your program meet the eligibility criteria. And start early! Scholarship deadlines may occur before your study away program application deadline.

General Study Away Scholarships

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship - Award amounts of up to $5,000 for undergraduate students receiving Pell Grant. Nearly 3,000 scholarships are awarded annually! Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national to apply. Deadlines are in early October (Cycle 1) or early March (Cycle 2), depending on program start date.

Gilman-McCain Scholarship - $5,000 award amount for undergraduate students who are child or spousal dependents of active or activated United States military personnel and receive any type of Title IV federal financial aid. Multiple application deadlines based on program start date.

Fund for Education Abroad - Award amounts of up to $5,000. Study abroad program must be a minimum of four weeks (28 days). Must be U.S. citizens, permanent residents or DACA students to apply. January deadline for all Summer and Fall programs. September deadline for Spring programs.

Diversity Abroad Overseas Ambassador Scholarship - Award amounts of up to $500. Study abroad program must be one full term. No citizenship status requirements.

GoOverSeas Scholarships - Scholarships ranging in amounts of $500-$15,000. Deadlines and eligibility requirements vary. Contest open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund - Offers a variety of scholarships to students of Hispanic heritage. Must be U.S. citizens, permanent residents or DACA students to apply. Award amounts and deadlines vary.

The Bill Raskob Foundation - Offers a variety of scholarships and loans. Award amounts and deadlines vary.

Asian Pacific Fund – Offers a variety of scholarships to students of Asian heritage. Citizenship status requirements, award amounts and deadlines vary.

Asia and Pacific Islander American Scholarships – Offers a variety of scholarships with award amounts of up to $5,000. Ethnic heritage requirements, citizenship status requirements, award amounts and deadlines vary.

NAACP/UNCF Scholarships – Offers a variety of scholarships of various award amounts. Racial/ethnic heritage requirements, citizenship status requirements, award amounts and deadlines vary.

National Italian American Foundation – Scholarship awards of up to $12,000 to students of Italian heritage. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. March deadline.

Point Foundation – Scholarship awards of various amounts designated for members of the LGBTQ community. No citizenship status requirements.

Nitro Scholarships – Database displaying 50+ scholarship opportunities for Asian-American students. Students can search by their field of study, the award amount, and whether the scholarship is need-based.

Fulbright – Grants for recent graduates, master’s candidates and young professionals.

 Other Funding IDEAS AND resources

  • Research additional outside scholarships by visiting the Financial Aid office’s Outside Scholarship Information and Search page on Inside ArtCenter

  • Research additional scholarship opportunities through the following:

    • National Chapters of Honor Societies or fraternities/sororities

    • Church or other religious organizations

    • Organizations related to your heritage

    • Professional art and design organizations related to your major

    • Family member’s company or their organizational affiliations

    • Government website for the country you will be going to

  • If you are participating in an Individualized Study Away program, check with your program provider or host institution to see what scholarships they offer

  • You may also wish to consider raising money using crowd-funding websites such as FundMyTravel or GoFundMe

  • If you live in an apartment, consider subletting your room or apartment while you’re away. Suspend your cell phone service if you won’t be using it while abroad, and put your car insurance on hold while you’re out of the country.

Country and Region-Specific Scholarships

Country- and region-specific scholarships are tied to the area in which the study away program takes place. Language scholarships are for programs that focus on language acquisition. When researching scholarships, check to confirm that you and your program meet the eligibility criteria. And start early! Scholarship deadlines may occur before your study away program application deadline.

American-Scandinavian Foundation – Award amounts of up to $5,000 for students studying in Scandinavian countries (Sweden, Denmark, Norway). Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident to apply. November deadline.

Bridging Scholarships – Scholarship awards of up to $2,500 for U.S. citizens studying abroad in Japan.

DAAD Scholarships – Several funding opportunities available for study abroad in Germany. No citizenship status requirements.

Freeman-Asia Scholarship – Award amounts of up to $5,000 for students studying abroad in Asia. Must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident to apply.

Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarships – Scholarship awards of various amounts for students studying abroad in Japan.

Toshizo Watanabe Endowed Scholarship – Scholarships awarded to American undergraduate students who are pursuing international study in Japan. This scholarship will support up to the full cost of attendance to the study abroad program of the recipient’s choice.

Turkish Coalition of America – Scholarship awards for U.S. citizens or permanent residents studying abroad in Turkey, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, or Bosnia and Herzegovina.
