Academic policies

Academic Standing: Students must remain in good academic standing during the term prior to their study abroad experience. Students not in good academic standing may be disqualified from participation. Students on academic probation or suspension may not participate in study abroad.

Registration Process + Timeline: All students, regardless of program type, must be registered for ArtCenter credits the term of their study away program. The process is slightly different, depending on your program type. In all cases, you must clear any holds before you can register. Neither the Registrar nor the Exchange and Study Away office are responsible for following up on delayed registrations due to holds. Failure to register in the proper units will jeopardize your ability to receive credit for your coursework or utilize financial aid.

registration details

  • Faculty-Led Programs

Once you have been accepted into a faculty-led study away program, whether a 3-unit course or 12-18 unit full-term program, you will be given access to register for the restricted course(s) at your normally scheduled registration appointment time.

  • Exchange programs

If you are participating in an Exchange Program, you will register for 12-units worth of placeholder courses, identified for you, for the term you will be away (Note: 12 units merely indicates full-time status. You can transfer back more than 12 units). Once ArtCenter receives your transcript from the exchange partner school, the appropriate course credit will be applied. It is your responsibility to ensure that your transcript is received by Exchange and Study Away.

  • Individualized programs

If you are participating in an Individualized Program, you must submit a Leave of Absence Form. Our office will then register you in placeholder courses for the term you will be away. This will allow you to access state and federal financial aid. Once ArtCenter receives your transcript from the program, the appropriate course credit will be applied. It is your responsibility to ensure that your transcript is received by Exchange and Study Away.

course credit and approvals

Students can make progress in their major and minor concentrations while exploring new areas of interest and opportunities that are not available in Pasadena.

Students on Faculty-Led Programs take a specific course or courses that they register for at ArtCenter. Students should always speak with their departmental advisor to determine how this course work will factor into their degree progress. In some instances, students will need to complete a Waive/Sub Form in order to ensure the courses taken on the program count towards specific departmental or academic requirements. There is no other credit transfer process for these programs as these are ArtCenter courses.

Students participating on an Exchange or Individualized Program need to follow the steps outlined below and complete the Study Away Transfer Credit Approval Form. Exchange and Study Away facilitates the transfer of course credit to the student’s record:

Students receiving state and/or federal aid should pay particular attention that a minimum of the equivalent of 12 units of ArtCenter credit transfer back as classes that fulfill ArtCenter degree requirements.
